The Guardians of Leuser
This film was originally made to show at a fundraising evening, to create an emotional connection, and inspire attendees to support the protection of an incredible ecosystem.
Leuser is a magical rainforest in northern Sumatra, home to rhinos, tigers, orangutans and elephants. This little-known paradise is faced with myriad threats, and we urgently need to shine a spotlight on Leuser to bolster conservation efforts. .
One of our supporters, Joe de Kadt, was a film-maker, and had offered his talents to help us in a meaningful way. With zero budget available, we wrote a script and sent Joe some archive footage. Within days, he decided to fly out to Sumatra. Having always had a passion for conservation, he wanted to give this his full attention.
The concept was to focus on the conservation champions working on the frontline. Joe shot footage of the team going about their work, planting trees, patrolling the forest. He also completely re-wrote the script, transforming it into poetry. Donald Sumpter donated his time for the voiceover and the musicians donated the rights.
It was shown at our event, moving many of the attendees to tears. We raised over £650,000 for conservation action for Leuser.
