#ReframeCompetition: The background story
The Youth Sport Trust (YST) aims to support removing the causes of negative experiences in sport for young people and to ensure youth sport is inclusive, accessible and fun. Insight gained from the Girls Active programme identified an over emphasis on competition is a challenge for some young people. This led to the YST Research and Insight team exploring the possibility of alternative competition formats.
Utilising the findings, the YST, funded by the Sport England National Lottery, launched a pilot project involving 10 SGOs, NGBs and one Active Partnership to evaluate the feasibility of conducting alternative competition formats through the School Games Organiser network with the overarching aim of increasing young people’s participation in sport and physical activity.
#ReframeCompetition: What are we trying to achieve?
The campaign looks to tackle some of the negative experiences that exist within competition when there is an over-emphasis on a single outcome – most goals, fastest time or furthest distance. We know that these issues are prominent in school sport competitions and in some cases, having negative effects on young people taking part in school sport.
