Our Story-A Film About Young People's Bereavement

‘Our Story’ was created by a group of young people who access the Children’s Bereavement Service at The Shakespeare Hospice, supported by the staff team and a professional film maker.

The documentary style film highlights the stories of 5 young people who talk about the difficulties they faced when their loved ones died, what helped them to get through their situation and what didn’t help.

One objective of the project was to provide therapeutic support for older bereaved young people in a way which would give them a tangible outcome to help other young people who had been bereaved. They wanted to share their stories and experiences with other bereaved young people to let them know they are not alone.

A further objective was that the group wanted teachers and professionals working with bereaved children and young people to watch the film and understand how grief affects children and how to support them.

Following the launch of the film during Children’s Grief Awareness Week in 2017, the Hospice team have taken the film into schools and have shown the film to professionals as part of a training package to raise awareness of childhood bereavement.
