One Girl's Journey
Our objective was to create an inspiring brand film that celebrated ActionAid’s new focus on women and girls and showcased different aspects of the charity’s work, from girls’ education to tackling violence.
One Girl’s Journey is a short film shot entirely from the perspective of Grace, a fictional girl growing up in Ghana. The film follows Grace through key moments of her childhood, demonstrating how ActionAid supports women and girls living in poverty as they tackle the challenges of their everyday lives. Every scene – from Grace being shamed for having her period, to avoiding an abduction attempt – was meticulously researched and based on case study material.
It was essential that our film had the full involvement of women and girls who benefit from our work. In Ul-Kpong, Ghana, our local staff and the community were keen to act, help direct and assist with logistics. Fifty-one members of the local community appear in the finished film. They had no prior acting experience and didn’t speak English, so we relied on visual storyboards and local translators. Through working with the community, we ensured all the scenes reflected girls’ experiences. ‘Survivor’, the empowering backing track, was donated by French-Congolese band Tshegue.
