MANTA TRUST - Marine Education Programme

The Manta Trust is working to improve marine education and conservation in the Maldives, as Baba Dioum famously said: “In the end we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand; and we will understand only what we are taught.”

Our Marine Education Program works with local schools in the Maldives and aims to inspire a generation of ocean guardians, passionate about conserving their own marine environments. The program includes modules on Maldives marine ecosystems, coral reefs, megafauna, waste pollution and ecosystem conservation. The highlight for students is the snorkelling field trip - many have never seen the amazing underwater marine life around their islands despite living next to the ocean.

We work globally to protect and research manta and devil rays, which are one of the most intelligent yet threatened fish in our seas. Though great steps have been taken to enhance protection for them over the last decade, tens of thousands are still being killed as by-catch in high seas fisheries, and the habitats on which they depend are threatened by development, pollution and the effects of climate change.

Together we hope to turn the tide for these beautiful creatures!
