Beyond the Streets
Beyond the Streets is a charity that partners with women on their journey out of sexual exploitation. When we were given the generous opportunity to make a film with Big Picture Charity Films, we were faced with a choice about what we wanted people to understand about our work. We decided to focus on who we are and why we do the work that we do; our values and the aspirations we have for the women we work with. We hope that by understanding the barriers woman face that keep them involved in prostitution, we can work together to ensure they are met with a compassionate response.
Women in prostitution are surrounded by unhelpful representations in the media, from Pretty Woman to Jack the Ripper, shown as needing to be saved or simply disposable. By rooting our film in history we wanted to share how, despite dramatic changes in our society over the last century, that our views of women selling sex are still rooted in stigma and shame. Too often women are written off and ignored. Taking people on a journey from misunderstanding to compassion, we want to challenge and educate; driving change so women get the treatment they deserve.
