Shivia's Poultry Development Services programme
Akina and her husband Hajrat have a large family including seven children. As agricultural labourers they earn about £1 each per day. Hajrat also owns a pedal van and delivers vegetables from the fields to the local market. In total, their income amounted to about Rs.3,600 (£36) a month. But the pedal van broke and they could not afford to fix it.They were already in debt to the local money-lender just to buy basic food for the family. Then Akina heard about Shivia’s Poultry Development Services programme through one of our local Livelihood Service Providers and soon she received her “poultry toolkit” of 10 chicks and six months of training. She is now earning a regular income from raising chickens and selling the produce. She paid for the repairs to Hajrat’s pedal van so he earning over Rs 400 a day doing deliveries again. Akina has also paid off their debts and has high hopes of providing for their grandson’s education. Her story is a wonderful example of how Poultry Development Services is an enabling factor that allows poor families to change their lives in a positive and permanent way.
